Target Audience

Updated: Nov 21, 2018

After changing concepts and narrowing the focus of my project, I have finally decided on the rise of artificial wave pools and their impacts on surfing.

A key element to take into consideration when deciding on a topic is who you are aiming your project at and who you are writing it for.

When choosing my target audience and publication, the obvious route to go down would be to write for a surfing magazine. However, a lot of surfing based magazines are very picture lead and the stories involved are relatively soft and short. I am aiming to make my feature as in-depth and detailed as possible and after speaking to my tutor, I decided I would look elsewhere in terms of target publication.

After doing some research into various magazines, I decided I would produce my project for Huck Magazine.

Launched in 2006, the magazine explores sub cultures as entry points to articles, originally basing themselves around surf and skate culture. But have since focused on other alternative themes as well.

In terms of the demographic of my audience, I will be looking at 18-25/30 year olds who are interested in alternative cultures, niche topics or enjoy surfing.

Now I have chosen a target audience, I know who I'm writing for and this will reflect in the writing style and aesthetics of the project.
