Riding the artificial wave

Welcome to my investigative feature called riding the artificial wave. I have set up this blog for the sole purpose of documenting my journey through the making of this feature.

The sport, culture and lifestyle of surfing is currently being challenged by technological advancements which are taking surfing further away from the ocean. Driven by their desire to surf the perfect wave, companies are investing millions into building new artificial wave technology at landlocked destinations.

Mechanical pools which produce ridable waves are nothing out of the ordinary, but it is only now that these surf parks are becoming economically viable.

The purpose of my feature is to investigate how the rise of artificial wave pools are effecting the sport, culture and lifestyle of surfing. By interviewing people who are very much invested in the wave pool game and speaking to major players in the surfing world, I hope to find out what kind of impact this new phenomenon is having.
