Having conducted a survey for my magazine feature, I have now made progress on the whole piece. I have decided to call it surfing away from shore, as it looks at how surfing is developing away from the ocean and how the rise of wave pools is impacting the sport.
I have managed to source some great interviewee's who have given an insight into their views on artificial wave technology, their involvement with it and how it is impacting them.
My first interviewee is Jess Ponting, who is a leading academic in sustainable surf tourism and is very much involved in the wave pool game. He runs a business called STOKE certified who are working on a certification programme for wave pool companies, so they can meet certain sustainability standards.
Jess' knowledge on artificial surf technology was second to none and I really learnt a lot from my interview with him.
I also managed to speak with Wayne Dart who is a representative for wave pool company Surf Lakes. It was crucial that I managed to speak to someone working and advocating for artificial surf technology. I have now gained a first hand insight into their thoughts on how they're impacting the sport and culture of surfing.
I wanted to gain an understanding of how wave pools could affect someones daily life and in order to do this I interviewed Joel Gray who has been a professional surf coach most of his life. He spoke about how he is now adapting coaching sessions to fit in with wave pools and how the artificial acts as a training ground for surfers and coaches alike.
I am hoping to set up another interview to finish off the print piece. As previously mentioned I will be writing for Huck magazine and will be producing a layout in indesign which fits in with their style.
Next up, the online article.
